The Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering is designed to prepare students for an entry-level software engineering position in industry that supports the design and implementation of software systems with the focus on real-time, embedded, and safety-critical applications. Such systems are critical in aviation, space, medicine, and other disciplines that rely on high-quality, dependable software.
The program prepares students careers in scientific research; higher education; technology research and development, project management and other specialized technical work in the software industry.
Many software engineers work as employees or contractors. Software engineers work with businesses, government agencies (civilian or military), and non-profit organizations. Some software engineers work for themselves as freelancers. Some organizations have specialists to perform each of the tasks in the software development process. Other organizations require software engineers to do many or all of them. In large projects, people may specialize in only one role. In small projects, people may fill several or all roles at the same time. Specializations include: in industry (analysts, architects, developers, testers, technical support, middleware analysts, managers) and in academia (educators, researchers).
Most software engineers and programmers work 40 hours a week, but about 15 percent of software engineers and 11 percent of programmers worked more than 50 hours a week in 2008. Injuries in these occupations are rare
In a few years of completing their undergraduate degree, graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering:
Will establish themselves in successful aerospace, aviation, and engineering careers and/or will be pursuing advanced degrees;
Will be serving society and their professions as involved and responsible citizens, leaders, and role models by demonstrating strong values, high ethical standards, and integrity;
Will have reputations as practical problem solvers, systems thinkers, innovators, and as those who are curious and have a continued interest in learning.
The curriculum is designed to facilitate accomplishment of these objectives by program graduates. It provides a broad education, including fundamental knowledge about computer software and hardware. It also allows graduates to work in a team environment and to recognize the value of collaborative effort. The program lays a foundation for lifelong learning, professional growth, and ethical and responsible behavior in society.
