LSHU was originally founded in Dalian in 1950 as the first petroleum school of New China. In 1953 the school was relocated to Fushun and in 1958 it was upgraded to Fushun Petroleum Institute. In February 2000 its leadership was transferred to the People’s Government of Liaoning Province, in light of the management system of “simultaneous construction by central and local governments, with the local government playing a more prominent role”. In February 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Fushun Petroleum Institute was renamed as Liaoning Shihua University.
For more than 68 years, LSHU has developed into a multidisciplinary university featuring petrochemical engineering with 7 well-coordinated major disciplines. The campus covers more than 127 Ha. With 786,000 square meters building area, and 100,000 square meters stadiums. LSHU has the largest library in the northeast of China, which holds 1,238,400 books, and teaching and researching instruments worth 250 million RMB.
Currently, there are over 26,000 students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate degrees, and 1504 full time staffs. Now the university has 18 schools and colleges with providing 15 key provincial labs, 2 doctoral programs, 57 master programs, 12 engineering master programs and 52 undergraduate programs. The university is also a base for cultivating urgently-needed college graduates for the petrochemical industry in Liaoning Province.
LSHU offers “Chinese Government” Scholarship and “Silk-road Chinese Government Scholarship” all international students. “Chinese Government Scholarship” and “Silk-road Chinese Government Scholarship” are established by the Ministry of Education of P.R.China. It provides full scholarships to international students who are admitted in our Master programs. Currently 34 “Chinese Government Scholarship” students and 28 “Silk-road Chinese Government Scholarship” students are studying at LSHU.
In 2009, the International Education College (IEC) was founded for recruiting, teaching and managing international students. Its primary mission is to promote international culture and education cooperation and communication, to recruit and cultivate international students from all over the world. It is not only the ideal platform for international students to receive higher education and to study Chinese language and culture, but also an important stage for mutual communication between Chinese and international students. Since the foundation of the college, education for international students has grown rapidly. The number of the in-school students has exceeded 1100, coming from more than 60 countries around the world.
International Education College is composed of Comprehensive Office, International Students’ Admission Office, Students’ Affairs Office and Teaching Affairs Office. IEC is equipped with standard facilities, advanced management systems, and outstanding faculties. Benefited from the integration of all the disciplines, IEC enjoys the resources from the whole university, and conducts teaching and scientific research relying on university’s dominant disciplines. IEC develops its features and advantages, and continuously improves teaching quality by taking teaching as the core, cultivating talents as the goal, and characterized teaching as the means. The college will try its best to achieve high-level education for international students to meet the needs in various aspects. At present, IEC provides bachelor and master programs taught in English for international students majoring in Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Mechanical Design & Manufacture and Automation, Computer Science and Technology, Communication Engineering, Mining Engineering and Business Administration, etc.
