Its history can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902. It has been serving as a cradle for advanced teacher education in China for more than 110 years. The university adheres to the principle of attaching primary importance to the faculty and vigorously carries out the strategy of developing the university through the cultivation of talents.
Over 110 years, there have been a large number of scholars well-known home and abroad who engage in research, publishing and teaching at the university. Their efforts and contributions have formulated an academic tradition in pursuit of truth, as seen in the university motto: A virtuous and loving life, a path of learning and practice. At present, in the 26 schools and colleges, the university offers 99 bachelor degree programs, 181 master programs and 113 doctoral programs. In 2017, there are over 28000 students and 3164 faculties, of whom there are 571 professors. For more than 110 years, the discipline layout incorporates humanities, history, philosophy, education, science, engineering, economics, law, agriculture, medicine, art and management.
Nanjing Normal University is among the first that were authorized to be open to the world and is also the National Base for Teaching Chinese to Foreigners. Nanjing Normal University is titled as “Model Education Institution for International Students” by Chinese Education Ministry. So far, Nanjing Normal University has established 3 Confucius Institutes. Two are in North Carolina State University, Pace University and the other is in Alsace. Nanjing Normal University has established cooperation with 184 universities in 33 countries or regions. More than 25000 international students have graduated from Nanjing Normal Universities since 1965, when Nanjing Normal University opened to the world. The university has accepted over 1800 students from more than 130 countries in 2017.
