Yangzhou University (YZU) is a key comprehensive university jointly constructed by Jiangsu provincial government and Chinese ministry of education, and one of the first among colleges and universities authorized to grant master and doctoral degrees, pioneering in China in the merging of higher educational institutions. YZU was established in 1992 as a merger of 6 colleges including Yangzhou Teacher’s College, Jiangsu Agricultural College, Yangzhou Engineering College, Yangzhou Medical College, Jiangsu Hydraulic Engineering College and Jiangsu Business College. The history of YZU can be traced back to as early as 1902, when Mr. Zhang Jian, a renowned modern entrepreneur and educator, set up Tongzhou Private Teachers’ School and Tonghai Agricultural School.
YZU is now running on a large scale with a wide range of disciplines. There are more than 25,000 undergraduates and 10,000 postgraduates including around 2,000 international students. YZU offers 120 bachelor’s programs, 240 master’s programs, 70 doctoral programs on campus, and holds 14 post-doctoral mobile stations both in and off campuses, which covers 12 disciplines including philosophy, economy, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. 6 disciplines, namely, Chemistry, Plant and Animal Sciences, Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Material Science have entered ESI top 1% among worldwide universities and scientific research institutions. YZU has also established an international joint laboratory. There are now 5,900 faculty and staff, including 2,300 faculties and 1,900 medical staff members. More than 1,300 are senior faculties and 2,700 are master and doctoral supervisors. YZU also has 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 foreign academician.
YZU possesses good facilities and active in international exchanges. YZU now covers a land area of over 4,000 mu (or some 267 hectares) with 1.58 million square meters of dormitory buildings. 8 campuses are located in the central part of Yangzhou. There are various bases for teaching, scientific and research, and internship including an affiliated hospital, internship companies, an experimental farm, an animal hospital and an affiliated high school and well-equipped clinical medical college. YZU attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchanges, and it has set up close cooperation and exchange relations with over 230 higher education institutions and research institutes in 45 countries and regions. YZU is also eligible in recruiting international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
