Co-sponsored by the Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education, Fuzhou University is one of the national key universities that are selected into the “211 Project”, a Chinese government programme for the 21st century to support 100 selected universities for their further rapid development and it is a national first-class discipline construction college and university. Founded in 1958, it has now developed into a key comprehensive university in Fujian Province, giving priority to engineering courses and also enjoying a reputation for excellence in other fields including sciences, economics, management, liberal arts, law, arts and design, etc.

Now Fuzhou University covers more than 467 hectares, including several campuses such as Yishan campus, Qishan campus, Tongpan campus, Quangang campus, Jinjiang campus, Jimei campus and the College of Industrial Art in Xiamen. The main running campus is Qishan campus, located in the University Town of Fuzhou Region. The present floor space of the whole university buildings for public use has reached over 1.23 million square meters and the sports field covers over 140,000 square meters. The total value of fixed assets is more than 3.3 billion Yuan, among which 1 billion are instruments and equipment for teaching and research. Its central library holds a collection of approximately 3.2 million volumes of books, 2.2 million volumes of e-books. Fuzhou University Network and Information Center is used as the main connection to Chinese Education and Scientific Research Network in Fuzhou.

There are 19 colleges in Fuzhou University, mainly for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate education and 1 independently operated colleges. The University boasts 1 national key subject, 1 national key supporting subject, 5 provincial advantageous subject innovation platform, 6 provincial characteristic subjects and 26 provincial key subjects. Especially the Chemistry, Engineering and Materials Science are in the international ESI discipline ranking top 1%, and the total subjects of the top %1 major in ESI is 49th rank among the mainland universities. There are 11 post-doctoral research stations, 10 doctoral degree programmes for the first-rank disciplines, 3 doctoral degree programmes for the second-rank disciplines (not including the first-rank disciplines), 36 master’s degree programmes for the first-rank disciplines, 7 master’s degree programmes for the second-rank disciplines (not including the first-rank disciplines), 12 professional degree programmes (Among them, there are 23 engineering fields in the engineering master's degree programmers) and 78 undergraduate programmes. In the world most recognized university ranking website TIMES, Fuzhou University is ranking 671 in the world and 40 in China mainland.

Fuzhou University has a staff of 3170, including over 1,996 full-time teachers. Among them there are 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (5 of them are double-employed), 1 academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Science, 1 academician of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1 National outstanding professional and technical personnel, 1 chief scientist of project “973 program”, 12 professor selected into the National One-Thousand Talents Scheme (1000-Plan), 4 professor selected into the National Ten-Thousand Talents Scheme (10000-Plan), 5 Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor, 1 nationally outstanding teachers, 8 winners of the top national awards for Science and Technology, 8 national candidates for the million talents project, 5 Outstanding mid-aged experts, 2 winners of national outstanding young science fund, 13 candidates for the “New century excellent talent support plan” of ministry of education, 116 specialists are enjoying the State Council Special Allowance, 272 doctoral supervisors. One team has been selected into the national advanced collective of professional and technical personnel, two team has been selected into the “Cheung Kong scholar and innovation team development plan.” of ministry of education, 1 team has been selected as key field innovation team of “Innovative talent promotion plan.” of Ministry of Science and Technology, and Fuzhou University has been selected into Chinese “College internationalization demonstration college promotion plan” and “Higher school discipline innovation introduction program.”

Fuzhou University has been approved by the Ministry of Education to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan regions and also abroad. At present, there are about 24,000 undergraduate students and 8,200 graduate students, among which over 550 are Ph.D. students.  Since its establishment, about 210,000 students have graduated from Fuzhou University, including full-time doctoral and master’s degree students as well as those with the bachelor’s degrees and associate degrees.

Fuzhou University has been taking great efforts to develop the cooperation and exchange with the outside world, It has built a friendly and collaborative relationship with Tsinghua university, Peking University, renmin university of China and other famous universities, scientific research institutes in Hong Kong, Macao, TaiWan , and more than 140 universities in different countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia and so on. The University is also engaged in promoting the exchanges between Chinese civilization and Western civilization, each year, there are more than 150 foreign experts are working in the school. It has established the “Library of the Western Belvedere”, the first western works center in China, and the Institute of International Sinology. Now Fuzhou University has 3 Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, 40 different Students' long /short visit program, including undergraduate, master, doctor and other advanced education level and the only one school that has cooperative education with Taiwan in doctor level, the only one school that has undergraduate and master level Sino-foreign cooperative education projects in Fujian province.
