It is co-founded by the Ministry of Education and the Yunnan Provincial Government, one of the 100 key universities in the National Central and Western Infrastructure Capability Improvement Project. A large number of well-know scholars, including Nobel Prize winner Dr. Yang Zhenning and Dr. Li Zhengdao, used to work or study on campus.
The university covers a total area of 3,300 Mu (about 543 acres). It consists of 22 schools plus two independent schools and more than 40 research institutes. It has now over 30,000 full-time students including Ph.D., postgraduates and undergraduates, with over 18,000 students in the School of Continuing Education. Its library is the provincial center of the data resources of Chinese higher education and houses more than 3,300,000 copies of books of various kinds with a new-generation digitalized service system. It offers 94 bachelor’s programs,2 postdoctoral research programs, 1 doctoral program in a first-class discipline, 7 doctoral programs in second-class disciplines, 26 master’s programs in first-class disciplines, 130 master’s programs in second-class disciplines, and 13 professional master’s programs, such as MBA and M.Ed. It is one of the first 24 universities in China that offer the Master’s Program for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.
Yunnan Normal University, as the English Teacher Training center in southwest China established by UNESCO, is one of the two universities in Yunnan that is eligible to enroll Hong Kong, Macao students. The university has also established inter-school exchanges with more than 100 foreign universities and research institutions, such as the United States, Germany, the UK, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. As the institution that is responsible for the admission and education of international students of Yunnan Normal University, the School of International Chinese Studies (SICS) has achieved a rapid increase in international admission and enrollment, with an accumulative international enrollment of over 18,000 during the past ten years. More than 80 countries and regions all over the world are represented.
