Introduction

Shanghai Ocean University formerly Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School established in 1912 is a university with glorious tradition. In 1952, it became the first fisheries college, namely, Shanghai Fisheries College and was renamed Shanghai Fisheries University in 1985. In 2008, it was renamed Shanghai Ocean University. Shanghai Ocean University has 2 post-doctoral research stations, 3 first-degree Specialties for Doctors, 21 second-class Specialties for Doctors, 10 first-degree Master degree programs, 43 second-class Master degree programs, 46 undergraduate programs and directions. There are 12,000 undergraduate students and 2500 postgraduate students enrolled in the university. Among 1100 work staff members, there are 800 teachers and scientific researchers, including 400 with senior titles and 350 master and doctoral supervisors.

Shanghai Ocean University has developed into a multi-disciplinary university focusing on the coordinated development in agriculture, science, engineering, economics, arts and management with complete disciplines and distinctive features. The university has 1 state-level key discipline, 12 provincial-level disciplines, 5 national characteristic majors, 3 state-level quality courses, 1 national teaching team, 15 Shanghai education highlands and 1 Shanghai University E-institute. Since 1990s, the university has 50 scientific achievements leading the world, 90 leading China and other 40 winning national awards for scientific researching projects and achievements. The university has made great contribution in such fields as environmental protection, species protection, genetic breeding, food processing, marine resources development and utilization, aquaculture, agricultural economics and management and so on.

Shanghai Ocean University has extensive foreign exchanges and has established cooperation with USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, Russia, etc, universities in Taiwan and lots of international organizations. The university also participates in the Sino-USA Marine Biological Resources Cooperation Project and has built longstanding partnerships with FAO, Asian Fisheries Society, and ICLARM, etc.

As early as 1955, Shanghai Ocean University commenced to accept international students. It has been appointed by Shanghai Municipal Government to accept international students with Shanghai Government Scholarship.
