Founded in 1956, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is one of the earliest higher education institutions for Chinese medicine in the People’s Republic of China. Founded in 1956, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is one of the earliest higher education institutions for Chinese medicine in the People’s Republic of China. It is the exclusive top university of traditional Chinese medicine listed under the Project 985 and Project 211. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education and jointly established by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the municipal government of Beijing. The university owns three campuses respectively located in He Ping District, Wang Jing District and Liang Xiang District.
BUCM consists of the following schools: School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, School of Bioscience, School of Chinese Materia Medica, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, School of Management, School of Nursing, School of Humanities, School of Clinical Medicine, Graduate School, International School, School of Continuing Education, School of Distance Education, and School of Chinese Culture Studies. BUCM has striven to build a professional talents training system emphasizing high-level education for the new century. Currently, the university offers 12 bachelor’s degree programs, 45 master’s degree programs, and 42 doctor’s degree programs. By now there are a total of 29293 students in the university. Within this total, 10596 are full-time students, 37.39% are Master's and PhD students and 10.02% are international students.
BUCM is among the first batch of Chinese medical institutions qualified for offering doctoral programs and establishing post-doctoral research stations. The 3 first-grade subjects, namely Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, are all accredited to grant doctoral degrees. The University now has 2 state-level first-grade subjects, 15 state-level second-grade subjects, 48 ministry-level subjects of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 10 Beijing municipality-level subjects. The key subjects of BUCM are in the leading position among all Chinese medicine universities in China.
BUCM owns 6 affiliated hospitals: the Dong Zhi Men Hospital (the First School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), the Dong Fang Hospital (the Second School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), and the Third Affiliated Hospital (the Third School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), Zao Zhuang Hospital (the Forth Affiliated Hospital), Shen Zhen Hospital (the Fifth Affiliated Hospital), Sun Simiao Hospital (the seventh Affiliated Hospital). It also owns 36 teaching hospitals for all students’ clinical study and internship. Since its establishment, BUCM begun to accept foreign students, which was earlier than the other Chinese medicine universities in China. BUCM has trained more than 20,000 international Chinese medicine professionals from 91 countries and regions around the world. In recent years, BUCM has established fruitful cooperative projects with 128 famous universities and academic associations from 31 countries and regions.
BUCM publishes state-level, first-class academic periodicals, entitled Journal of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Modern Chinese Clinical Medicine, Education of Chinese Medicine, and Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences ( English Version). These are important windows for Chinese medicine exchange.
