Established on the basis of the amalgamation of Zhejiang Fishery University (founded in 1958,) and Zhoushan Junior Teachers College （founded in 1978）in 1998, Zhejiang Ocean University is a province-affiliated institution of higher learning under the jurisdiction of the provincial government. The university was authorized to offer Bachelor’s Degree Programs in 1982 and to provide Master’s Degree Programs in 2005.Characterized by its emphasis on the development of seas and oceans, ZOU stresses the coordinative development of multi-disciplines including science, agronomy, engineering, literature, medicine, management, pedagogy and economics.
Covering an area of about 167 hectares, including a floor space of over 600,000 square meters, the university boasts a total value of 200 million RMB yuan of teaching instruments and equipment and its library has a collection of over 1,600,000 volumes. It has nearly 1,300 full-time teachers and staff members, including 150 members with Ph.D.degree and 110 professors. Its full-time students in residence amount to as many as 16,000. There are 12 schools and an independent one Donghai Science & technology school, offering 44 undergraduate programs including two state-level characteristic specialties.. The university offers postgraduate programs for marine biology, fisheries, naval architecture and ocean engineering, etc. and postgraduate programs for agricultural extension, including fishery, food processing and safety, and the like. Also, the university has launched joint supervision PhD programs with five overseas universities.
Zhejiang Ocean University has the International Scientific & Technological Cooperation Base in the marine field, the only one conferred by the State Science and Technology Ministry in China. The university has developed carious forms of running school with such domestic ocean-related universities and institutes as well as with coastal local governments and departments concerned, and other enterprises. Besides, it has also established the exchange and cooperation relationship with more than 40 universities and scientific research institutes in such countries and regions as the United States, Canada, Japan, Russia and Taiwan, and so on.
