A Chinese visa is a permitting document issued by visa agencies for a foreign citizen to enter or leave China. Legal basis of visa in China are Law on the Entry and Exit of Aliens and its implementing rules, Law on People’s Republic of China Passport, various visa agreements (confirmed) signed between China government and foreign countries and other relevant rules.

3.Types of China visa for foreign students coming to study in China
1)An introduction to student’s visa(X visa)
Student’s visa ("X" Visa) is for the applicants who will study more than six months in China.
2)An introduction to visitor’s visa (F visa)
Visitor’s visa (F visa) is for foreigners who are invited to go to China for visit, investigate, giving lectures, doing business, exchange of science and technology, culture and sports, attending trade fairs, exhibition activities and so on, and who take less 6 months’ advance study and internship.
3)Introduction to tourist’s visa (L visa)
Tourist’s visa (L visa) is for foreigners who come to China for travelling, visiting families or some other private business.

When applying for a visa, it cannot be sure that the applicant will get it, they sometimes will be refused. Usually there will be embassy’s seal stamped on last page of passport of applicants whose application do not get through, the seal indicates that applicant with this passport haven’t been issued a visa after having been handled by the embassy.
1. Why applicant is refused to be issued a visa
That applicant is refused to be issued a visa usually due to following reasons:
1) Lacking of application documents
In order to reduce the influence by personal factors on visa application, embassy expressly stipulated requirements for visa application documents, the applicants are required to made up the rest of them if documents are incomplete, otherwise they will probably be refused to be issued a visa
2) Documents provided are fake
When dealing with visa application, the embassy need to make sure if the documents provided are real or not. If they are confirmed fake, applicant will probably be not allowed to be issued a visa.
3) Documents provided are invalid
Documents invalidation can also cause a failure in visa application, such as out-of-date passport, registration date on JW202 form is overdue.
4) Purpose for coming to China remains untested
That the purposes of applicants who intend to go to China remains untested means that applicants may not do as the same with statement on visa application form after they arrive in China, for example, they plan to go to China to visit families or find job even detain with student visa. Why visa officials made above judgment may because of following reason:
a. Lack proof of economic conditions, the income of applicants cannot afford all expenses for their study in China
b. The applicants once have illegal overstay record.
2. Tips
1) Start the visa application earlier if possible (taking student visa as example)
When applying for student visa, students should go to the visa issuing organizations and apply for student visa before the deadline of JW202 form and admission notice as soon as admission materials arrive. If the visa application cannot be handled in time till the deadline, students should tell the university immediately and ask them to issue certificate of deferred registration for visa application.
2) Get all the materials ready
The students should consult with local visa issuing organizations about specific requirements for application documents in advance, and prepare all these documents according to the requirements.
3) Provide valid and real documents
The application documents must be true and valid so as to apply for a visa successfully, otherwise it will be likely to be refused even have effect on the visa application next time.
4) Clearly and definitely indicate the plan and intention of coming to China when is being interviewed
That students clearly and definitely indicate the plan and intention of coming to China during the interview is also important for successful visa application.
The JW201 / JW202 is a form generated by a Chinese university upon admission acceptance. Once you're accepted, your Chinese university will send you (probably via global EMS or airmail) a document packet containing:
1. Original JW201 or JW202 Form
2. Letter of Acceptance from your Chinese School
And probably some other stuff in there as well.
The JW201 / JW202 is the form you'll need to take to your nearest Chinese consulate or embassy to apply for your Chinese student Visa (X-Visa).
You can't download a JW201 / JW202, since the school has to fill it out in Chinese, stamp it (nothing is official in China without being stamped) and sign it themselves. Therefore, if you haven't received your JW201 or JW202 form yet from your school and your departure date is approaching, you'll probably want to get them on the horn and find out what you have to do to finish processing your Chinese student Visa.
Chinese Student Visa (X Visa) is issued to an alien who comes to China for study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period of more than six months. Short-term advanced studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months shall apply for a (F) Visa.
Please submit the following documents with your application
a) A valid passport as well as a copy of its information page: Your valid passport must have at least six (6) months of remaining validity with at least one blank visa page in it.
b) Application form: One completed Visa Application Form
c) Photo: one recent photo of 2*2 square inch (black & white or color is acceptable) glued or stapled on the application form.
d) First time applicants whose former nationality was Chinese, shall write down his Chinese name in the application form and submit his original Chinese passport and the photocopy of the information page of the passport.
e) The original and photocopy of the approved Foreign Student Visa Application Form (JW201 or JW202) issued by relevant Chinese government unit, and the admission notice from the Chinese school.
How to apply
1. You may submit the application to the Visa Office of the Embassy or Consulate -General which holds consular jurisdiction in over the state where you reside;
2. If you cannot come in person, you may entrust someone else or a travel/visa agent to drop off your application at the visa office of the Embassy or Consulate -General which holds consular jurisdiction in over the state where you reside;

Processing Time
1. The regular processing time is 4 working days.
2. Express service: 2-3 working days processing, additional fees will be charged per visa.
3. Same day rush service: additional fees for 1 working day processing (applications presented before 12:30pm may be picked up between 2:30pm-3:00pm on the same day).
Visa fees
1 .Please pay by Visa, MasterCard, Money Order, Cashier's Check or Company Check. Cash or Personal checks are not acceptable.
2. Please make the company check, cashier's check or money order payable to Chinese Embassy.
3. Fee: subject to different countries.
Additional Information
1. If the visa application form is not filled out completely, correctly and legibly, this can cause a delay in processing or refusal of the requested visa.
2. Generally, (X) visa is valid for one entry, three months. The holder of a (X) visa must go through residential formalities in the local public security department within thirty days of entry into China.
3. American citizens may apply multiple entry ( X ) visas valid for 12 months. The holders must go through residential formalities in the local public security department within thirty days of entry into China.
4. Visa Officers may require some other relevant documents
5. Any person suffering from a mental disorder, leprosy, AIDS, venereal diseases, contagious tuberculosis or other such infectious diseases shall not be permitted to enter China.

Chinese Business Visa (F Visa) is issued to an alien who is invited to China for a visit, an investigation, a lecture, to do business, scientific-technological and culture exchanges, short-term advanced studies or internship for a period of no more than six months.
Please submit the following documents for your application
1. A valid passport as well as a copy of its information page: Your valid passport must have at least six (6) months of remaining validity and at least one blank visa page in it.
2. Application form: One completed Visa Application Form
3. Photo: one recent photo of 2x2 square inch (black & white or color is acceptable) glued or stapled on the application form.

Visa Validity and Duration of Stay
Usually the validity of a Single Entry or Double Entry "L" visa is 90 days or 180 days from the date of issue. This means the holder of the visa shall enter China no later than 90 days or 180 days from the date of issue, otherwise the visa will be expired and is null and void. Normally the duration of stay of a "F" visa is 30 days, which means the holder of the visa may stay in China for up to 30 days from the date of entry. If your estimated stay in China is longer than 30 days, please make it clear in the application form and ask for the Visa Officer's approval when you submit your application.
Additional Information
1. If the visa application form is not filled out completely, correctly and legibly, your visa application may be delayed or rejected.
2. Usually applicant should submit his visa application one month earlier before his trip.
3. Visa Officers are empowered to make final decision on the validity, duration of stay and times of entry of a visa and may require the applicants provide relevant documents.
4. Any person suffering from a mental disorder, leprosy, AIDS, venereal diseases, contagious tuberculosis or other such infectious diseases shall not be permitted to enter China.

Applicants may apply for a Single Entry (valid for 3-6 months), Double Entry (valid for 6 months), Multiple Entry (valid for 6 months or 12 months) "F" Visa as needed.
Applicants may apply for a Multiple Entry "F" Visa valid for 24 months, if
1) They submit documents proving that they have made an investment in China, or have established a collaboration with a Chinese company, e.g. business license, contracts, a letter of appointment, etc.; or
2) They have been issued "F" visa at least twice times, and shall submit copies of the visas.
