Marine Fisheries Science and Technology emphasizes societal need-driven research and learning in an interdisciplinary environment. The program focuses on observations, modeling, experimentation, and theory in the areas of ocean sciences, ocean technology, and marine policy.
Students work independently as well as collaboratively with our renowned faculty and some of the most highly regarded oceanographic institutions and may pursue a range of leading-edge research projects in areas that include, but are not limited to, the following:
The unit will introduce to the student to the factors that influence the design of a range of commercial fishing gears and methods as well as the fishing vessels that are required for their effective operation to produce high-quality seafood. Special emphasis is placed on identifying options to reduce any negative impacts of fishing on the marine environment and to promote responsible fishing practices within the fishing industry. This unit provides the opportunity to conduct practical experimental work at sea including the observation and participation in the operation of a range of fishing gears and methods.
This program is for students who aim to pursue a career in fisheries science and includes skills training that will empower students to conduct publication-quality research in any aspect of fisheries science.
Students will gain practical skills through coursework while developing their theoretical understanding through supervised research and through their interactions as an active participant within the scientific community. Students will also be exposed to the depth of the field of fisheries science through lab meetings, reading groups and guest lectures.
