The purpose of the Marine Engineering Technology program is to train students to serve as engineering officers aboard sea-going vessels. The curriculum is a thermal power-oriented specialization of a classical Mechanical Engineering Technology program. A thorough preparation in mathematics, science, and basic engineering courses is the foundation for further study in ship propulsion plants and electrical power generation and distribution equipment. Marine Engineering Technology focuses on power cycles, principles, and methods used to convert the energy in fossil fuels into useful power, and the selection and operation of the major components and sup port systems in the power cycle. Courses in marine engineering are supplemented with studies in naval architecture and maritime application of electrical engineering fundamentals. The students' education is enhanced through the use of computer simulation of propulsion plants and direct operation of marine machinery aboard the University's training ship.
1 Discuss fundamental knowledge of marine sciences relevant to maritime engineering
2 Describe the different types of marine crafts and structures that suit their operational role(s) and explain the different systems required to operate them
3 Explain the concepts and apply basic tools in project management in conjunction with the recognition of the importance of team work
4 Recognise the importance of ethics and sustainable engineering practice and argue their implications within the roles of engineers in the society
This unit provides an introduction to the ocean environment and the role of maritime engineers in the design of maritime infrastructure. The unit covers essential elementary knowledge of marine sciences, types of marine crafts and maritime structures, marine systems, and ocean renewable energy technology. The unit also introduces the student to the application of project management concepts and tools within the broader maritime engineering context.
Marine engineering and technology involves the systems and equipment onboard marine vehicles including:
There’s a particular emphasis on propulsion and control systems.
High efficiency and low environmental impact of marine engines are the key factors in assuring economical operation and environmental protection in maritime transportation. This has important implications for both economic success and environmental impact.
