Course Overview

The aim is to educate an engineer at management level – electro-technical officer of ships, who, by applying the knowledge of technological, economic, social, environmental, and natural sciences, would be able to safely operate the unlimited power ships’ electromechanical, electronic and control equipment of propulsion and auxiliary machinery; to perform the investigation into the service activity and to analyse the outcomes from a professional and economic viewpoint; to perform the control of activity in compliance with national and international general and maritime regulations, IMO conventions, national classification societies, national quality standards, and the requirements for safe navigation.

Economic and ecological operation of ships becomes more and more important. This only can be achieved using electronically based control systems. This happens in normal life on land as well as at seagoing ships.

Electronics are in use also in shipping already since many years. They are applied in navigation systems, radar, VHF Radio, telephone or information technology.

But meanwhile similar to automotive industry main propulsion drives in container- and passenger vessels are also electrical systems. At Offshore platforms not only cranes and drilling equipment have to be supplied electrically. They are doing dynamic positioning using electrical drives with an accuracy of 10cm under wind of 5bft.

Upon successful completion of the training programme cadets will be eligible for the Marine Electro-Technical Officer Certificate of Competency, which allows them to work on any type and size of vessel.

Suitable roles for graduate include:

  • Merchant Navy electro-technical officer
  • Project management
  • Electrical engineering technical assistant
  • Field support engineer
  • Plant operator/supervisor
  • Shore-based ship operations
  • Maritime administration.

This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan manage and carry out electrical and electronic engineering operations, maintenance, and repairs on generators, motors, transformers, and emergency power systems on commercial vessels. This includes the design, operational principles, construction, safety, statutory requirements, trouble shooting, testing and measurements, repairs and maintenance to enable safe and efficient operation of the electrical power generation, distribution and consumer machinery from a management level engineer. It also includes liaison with internal and external stakeholders on relevant matters.
